Macho ferns received their name because compared to other fern varieties such as boston’s and kimberly’s, they are, well, macho! Their fronds tend to be larger, and can grow three to four feet long! They can be grown indoors and outdoors and would do wonderfully on shaded/partially shaded porches and patios. Your Guide to Macho Fern Care Light: A partially shaded to fully shaded situation, possibly where moring sun and afternoon shade is received is ideal if outdoors. If indoors, medium to bright indirect light is preferred. For both scenarios, try to avoid harsh, direct sunlight as it will burn the fronds. Water: Water when the top inch of soil is dry to the touch. Macho ferns like moist soil, however be mindful not to oversaturate. These ferns are not drought tolerant, so do not allow soil to completely dry out. If indoors, expect to water once or twice a week. Temperature: These ferns are native to areas like Florida and Hawaii, so they like warm, tropical weather. Make sure to move your macho fern inside when cooler temperatures approach as they are not frost-tolerant. They also like to be protected from strong winds. Humidity: Native to swampy areas, machos like humidity and moisture. Make sure to provide some if you are in a dry area or if growing indoors. Feeding: Fertilize every 6 months or so.
